IGMP/MLD proxies offer the possibility to efficiently combine isolated multicast subnets with larger multicast routing infrastructure. In contrast to multicast routing, proxies are lightweight and do not need to cover the support for full routing protocols such as PIM or DVMRP. Instead, they manage group memberships, aggregate and forward the multicast traffic according to membership states. A usage example is in the PMIPv6 domains to provide transparent multicast services for mobile nodes. This presentation describes the development and the functionality of an open IGMP/MLD proxy implementation and its integration into the PMIPv6 protocol.
