In this talk we deal with the optimization of a sampling network measurement mechanism called hash-based packet selection. We introduce the concepts of sample size synchronization and configuration synchronization showing how they can be applied to minimize the deviations of the attained selection fraction. Minimizing these deviations is of paramount importance, because they can lead to a system overload. Finally, we show how these two concepts are being used in practice and briefly describe our extensions to the FOKUS Packet Tracking System.
