The IETF working group TAPS (transport services) wants to change the view of the transport layer from transport protocols to a set of transport services to simplify usability and extensibility. Starting for unicast, multicast group transport may be a future development target for TAPS. Our previous work on Hybrid Adaptive Multicast (HAMcast) has designed an abstract group communication layer, but mainly restricted transport to UDP.

This presentation discusses how transport services could be integrated into a hybrid multicast concept and how TAPS can be extended by such input. For this purpose, an introduction on reliable multicast transport (RMT) is given. RMT is a construction kit for multicast transport protocols that provides transport services like reliability, error detection, and congestion control to satisfy a wide range of application requirements.
