The European XFEL is currently the largest superconducting linear accelerator in operation, with a maximum energy delivery of 17.4 GeV. The machine beam control hardware is used in critical XFEL systems, such as low- level RF control, special diagnostics and time synchronization, making it highly dependable. At the same time, this hardware operates under harsh environmental conditions, potentially causing degradation and failures of the board components in the long term.

In this seminar, we survey different ageing mechanisms that affect the hardware under study, together with literature describing their measurable effects. Furthermore, we discuss techniques that can yield an overall status of the hardware aging, which we will evaluate, combine, and leverage in future work for predictive maintenance.
